“The Devil’s Garden” is one of the most compelling stories I have read concerning the German occupation of France during WWII. I have done a fair amount of reading of history concerning the War in Europe and the War in the Pacific. Authors that come to mind include Stephen Ambrose and E.B. Sledge respectively. As for Historical-Fiction about the war in Europe, the author that readily comes to mind, all of whose books I have read, is Chuck Driskell.I don’t typically retell story lines in my reviews. But, there are two segments in “...Garden” I want to briefly touch upon for the purpose of this review. In one scene, a fourteen year old French girl is brutally raped by a German soldier. While the details of the attack are not described graphically, the actions by her attacker, and later, the care administered to the young girl in the aftermath of the attack by her rescuers, is, in my opinion, what sets the stage for the events that follow in the story (ppgs 118-122). In the other segment, a young French girl, Margot, defines the place where these heinous crimes against the civilian population women and men alike, take place as “The Devil’s Garden”: “The devil’s garden”, ‘she repeated’. “When I was young, that’s what our priest called any place that was filled with evil” (page 245).In response to the aberrant behavior by the German occupiers, a civilian resistance unit known as “Les Invalides” is formed to counter attack the rapists. The research done by the author in telling about this group, likening it to the French Resistance is nothing short of excellent. The author’s remarks reflect on the conduct of these civilian resistance members in their all out effort to combat German atrocities.Although the author cites this as a work of fiction, I think it is more as a work of Historical Fiction, closely couched in actual history. Chuck Driskell clearly states in his closing remarks that acts of atrocious behavior against human kind are despicable, never mind, common in war torn situations. What this story does is bring into focus these inhumane actions, adjunct to all war crimes, scoffed at when committed, except by those on whom such acts were perpetrated.Truly, an excellent read. Chuck Driskell is one of the best young writers in the Thriller genre. The characters in "The Devil's Garden" come alive. This book makes the reader to feel as though they, too, are part of the French Resistance and that the next knock on the door will be a menacing Nazi patrol intent on punishment. The hero of the book, Boss, is a conflicted man determined to regain his full life despite the tragic loss of a limb. Ultimately, "The Devil's Garden" is the story of a hero who overcomes being marginalized to be an even better version of himself than he was before. I highly recommend this book. It is an exciting page turner that will leave the reader inspired.
